Recently, while watching an episode of Downton Abbey, I heard Lady Grantham tell Lady Mary very emphatically (in regards to her mothering skills) that "there is more than one kind of good mother". I love that line...it's so simple yet so true!
I think it is so easy these days to get caught up in the comparing game - all around us we are bombarded by pictures, blogs and websites with happy , smiling kids and moms who are just doing the most amazing things with them. I know I have spent way too much time worrying about all kinds of things I see or hear about..."I'm not crafty enough", "I'm not fun enough", "I'm not strict enough", "we don't do enough school", "we do too much school"....my thoughts don't even make sense most of the time, but it is just so easy to be persuaded that whatever someone else is doing must be better than whatever I am doing.
And it is such a fine line because I am very thankful for so many awesome ideas I have gleaned from other moms that have been willing to share what they are doing with their kids, whether in person or online or wherever....I just have to be careful not to fall into the next step of comparing and feeling inadequate.
Anyway, long story short, I love how in such a short, simple phrase is a truth so powerful - "there is more than one kind of good mother". Being a "good" mother may look different for each and every one of us, and it probably should being that we are all created as unique individuals by God Himself!
Being a mom is the best thing in the world and I have been praying that I will be able to find joy in the skills and abilities God has given me instead of worrying about what I am not! It's such a waste of time...especially when I could instead be loving on these cuties....
