Hill Church Picnic

Last night we went with my Hollenbach grandparents to the Hill Church picnic, a yearly tradition that I remember doing with my parents and grandparents when I was little. The Hill Church picnic isn't just any picnic and it's a great family experience every 2nd Sat in August. We started off by driving up above Boyertown and seriously into the middle of nowhere. If we had lost my grandparents on the way up (they drove in front of us), we would probably still be driving around Oberholtzer Rd or Goat Hill Rd trying to find a store or even just a person to ask directions to! So after driving about an hour we finally pulled into the picnic parking area, a field of deep grass and hay, and trudged up the hill (remember it's the HILL Church picnic) to the dining hall for dinner. We had a delicious dinner of homemade soup and then headed out to hear the big attraction - the Ringgold Band, a band that has been playing since the late 1800's and has specifically been coming to this picnic every year since around the 1930's. I think we were some of the youngest people there and everyone around us loved watching Caleb and Noah. Caleb sat the entire 2 hours, minus an icecream break, in the pavilion staring wide-eyed at the band and keeping very careful watch on the percussion section. We kept Noah on chairs outside for the most part since it was fairly loud, but even he danced around and kept everyone around us smiling. It was so fun taking the boys to something I have fond childhood memories of and having them really enjoy it too. Caleb even got to go "fishing" like I remember me and my brothers and sister doing too. It's amazing the simple things that can get kids so excited! Thank you Gigi and great grandpa for taking us - we had a great time!

Noah's version of "dinner on the go"...

Caleb fishing...he caught 2 fish! He got to pick out a little football for himself and a baseball for Noah.

Caleb watching the band with Gigi

Noah loved sitting with great grandpa and even clapped along with him after the songs were over

The Ringgold Band...they even played the Kansas Wildcats fight song which Caleb was so excited about, although he was really hoping for Maryland or Penn St!

Great grandpa, daddy and Noah watching from their seats

Ice cream time! Noah helped me with mine, but Caleb did great sitting and eating his for the 2nd part of the band.

The fire engine song is one of the big highlights of the night....they play REALLY loud sirens and blow smoke everywhere. My brothers loved this song when they were little and now Caleb can talk about it too! The lady announcing came up to Caleb and tried to coax him into yelling "fire, fire" into her microphone but he wasn't ready for that...maybe next year!

Sounds like you had a great time! Maybe we can take the boys to the concert in the park some Sunday.
